Activate YouTube’s Dark Theme in the desktop version

Learn how to activate YouTube’s Dark Theme in the desktop version and give less strain to your eyes while watching videos at night.

YouTube recently introduced Material Design to the desktop version. Along with other visual changes, one new feature is Dark Theme. It basically changes the light surfaces to dark and makes watching videos pleasant at night.

Toggle on YouTube’s Dark Theme

Here is how to turn on YouTube’s Dark Theme:

  1. Go to youtube.com/new and click TRY IT NOW. You can also go to this link via TestTube by clicking Test new features at the bottom of the YouTube’s homepage. You may skip this step if you already have Material Design look.
  2. Click account icon if you are signed in or three dots if signed out in the top-right corner and select Dark Theme.
  3. Toggle on to ACTIVATE DARK THEME.

Among the changes, I personally like the Theater mode where the top bar also turns dark when enabled. If you don’t like the new design, you can revert at any time by going to Settings as mentioned above in Step 2 and click Restore classic YouTube.
